Sixth Form - Arts, Science, technological, humanities and social sciences in Barcelona

Our Sixth Form ( batxillerat ) programme consists of two years’ academic training to prepare pupils for higher education, high-grade vocational training or to start a career.
Students must choose one of three specialities. All the students are required to study compulsory subjects, major subjects ( those related to the speciality ) and elective subjects. The different specialities are arranged according to the different fields of knowledge and the Higher Education curriculum. This system provides students with a general education and, at the same time, with a specialized knowledge that suits their personal characteristics and interests so that they can go on with future studies which allow them to incorporate into the labour market. At all times we watch over our students’ overall education, students who are competent for life and well prepared for the future.

Academic framework

We focus on developing our students’ intellectual power and responsibility with their academic work, which allows the acquisition of knowledge, techniques, procedures and skills to succeed in higher studies.

Human framework

Human framework Human framework

We consider that education is much more than acquiring knowledge. It is growing up as a person, developing our personal identity, self-esteem and critical thinking. In a word, it is getting ready to live in society. Therefore, we are deeply concerned with the fact that the students can progress towards educative aims such as self-confidence, self-esteem, love and respect to life, personal health care, tolerance, acceptance, mutual help and collaboration.
We promote the acquisition of values from specific subjects:
.Philosophy in 1st year is an ideal space for discussion and reflection, knowledge and development of personal identity and critical thinking
.Science for the Modern World in 1st year aims at helping students develop their verbal communicative skills and scientific language
.History of the Modern World in 1st year, History in 2nd year or Geography in 2nd year, in which students look at the current historical reality from the point of view of reflection and debate
.Real university life is witnessed to by the students enrolled in the Science and Technology speciality through their participation in practical experimental workshops in different faculties
.In Audiovisual Culture they film outside the school in order to get to know the reality of our neighbourhood. Every year a team of reporters take pictures, make videos and cover news items for the school blog, Facebook and Twitter
.In Economics, within the Junior Achievement Foundation programme, volunteers from large enterprises come to the classrooms to carry out activities and share experiences with the students
.Tutorial session in 1st and 2nd year, a weekly lesson which deals with counselling and tutorial issues (group dynamics, study techniques, higher education orientation monitored by the tutor.. )
.Personal orientation programme (both academic and vocational) so that our students can make an autonomous and responsible decision regarding their Higher Education studies
.Cross-curricular projects about social solidarity in collaboration with the Casal d’Avis or with AMPA activities
.Tutorial action plan, because the aim of these activities is the development of the student in order to strengthen a better personal growth and social integration.

Social and cultural framework

Social and cultural framework Social and cultural framework

In our Sixth Form (batxillerat) program we offer the following activities:

. We celebrate our cultural traditions (La Mercè, Castanyada, Christmas, Carnival, Easter, Sant Jordi’s Day and the school major festivity), the local festivals with giants and timbalers, balls de bastons and sardanes
. we go on school trips and do cultural activities related to music, language and literature, art and the knowledge of our culture and others; we also do activities that foster respect for the environment, ecology and sustainability.
. Cultural week: three days in which the students have the opportunity to attend talks, concerts, workshops and trips to do with social, cultural and international current issues our teenagers are particularly interested in.
. Literary week: by promoting and spreading information about the literary world we celebrate literature. We do it by means of activities such as visits to cultural centres and exhibitions, talks given by established authors and plays performed by students. It is in this context that we celebrate Sant Jordi’s Day, the school's main festival, one of the most emblematic days of the academic year, whichwe all look forward to.
. School day-trip: in the first week of the new year we go on an educational outing to welcome our students and allow them to socialize and interact in a warm and relaxed atmosphere. We design activities in order to promote the group dynamics and the opportunity to get to know each other (students and tutors) from the very beginning.
. Workshops at the university: an opportunity to get an insight of a higher education atmosphere
. Literary contests: we organize them in Spanish, English and Catalan ( Jocs Florals ), which let us feel the vitality of the students’ writings.
. International exchanges: 1st year students have the opportunity to host a foreign student for a week and some months later they are hosted by the same foreign student in their country. The aim is to know another culture and practise English.
. Participation in contests: in Maths (Proves Cangur) and in Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Geography and Economics (Olympics)
. Final school trip: in 2nd year, as a farewell trip. The school organizes it every year with the participation of all the students. It has two objectives: cultural and human. We want to strengthen the relationship among students, responsibility and respect to house rules that we consider essential values in our students’ personal growth.

Diversity outreach

As it has been mentioned before our teaching methods are based on the acquisition of mechanisms that allows to build knowledge from experience and reflection (such as observation, analysis, classification, deduction, application, association, synthesis, among others ). This teaching method makes students acquire solid structures of thought and work thoroughly on every task and so the results improve dramatically. These excellent results in the two years and in the PAU exams (Proves d’Accés a la Universitat) make it possible for over 90% of our students to be able to study the university degree they have chosen as their first option, that is, not only study what they want to, but also in the university of their choice.

The school timetable from 8h to 14.30h every day (except on Wednesdays, from 8h to 13.30h and from 15.30 to 17.30) is ideal for the students to be able to do other activities.

Assessment and promotion: the assessment of the students’ learning processes is carried out in relation to the final objectives of every subject. It is a continual assessment, with a close monitoring of each student’s learning process in every subject.
The teaching staff, led by the tutor, act communally in the assessment process when they make the required decisions.
