Encounters of the Danish kind by Barry K Allen<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year in Batxillerat, we have had the pleasure of meeting, both virtually and face-to-face, a group of Danish students from Handelsgymnasiet Lolland-Falster which is approximately half-way between the Danish capital of Copenhagen and the city of Hamburg in Germany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nyk\u00f8bing Falster<\/a><\/em> is the largest city on the islands of Lolland and Falster. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Wednesday 23 November, we met the students virtually via Zoom. Unfortunately, we had some technical challenges but Francisco Gabriel (BTX1A) managed to solve the problem. *Six of our BTX students had prepared a lovely presentation about our school, the neighbourhood and Barcelona and they talked the Danish through all the details and facts with videos and visuals. Then, we watched the Danish presentation. We now had a little preview of who was going to come and what they were like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

*Our six presenters were Irati Altuna, Laia Cattini, Selene Fern\u00e1ndez, Mart\u00ed Homedes, Abril Sanjos\u00e9 and Hannah Soul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One week later, on Wednesday 1st December, the Danish students came to visit us in IPSI BTX1A & B as part of their trip to Barcelona. We did an activity with them for an hour. We sat in pairs and each one talked to a Danish student. To break the ice, the teacher gave us a communicative activity full of questions about daily life to ask each other. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We enjoyed this activity because not only did we get to know each other but we also practised and improved our English. We learnt some interesting facts about Danish culture and we were surprised because we had the wrong idea of Denmark. We had imagined Denmark to be full of mountains but in fact they told us that they lived in a flat country. Also, they spoke to us in Danish and we hadn\u2019t imagined that language to be so difficult to understand.  We are now looking forward to visiting Denmark in the future!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– Such a wholesome experience that has proved to us that English does unite different cultures. We had such a great time and we have learned a little bit more about Denmark. Definitely repeatable, we had a lot of fun.  (Pol Regales, 1B)<\/strong>

Spanish for Danish<\/strong> by Mario Reverter, 2A<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our resident Spanish teachers for the day from BTX2: Carla Bosch\/ Max Broto\/ \u00c1lvaro Josa\/ Martina Massana\/ Pol Miralles\/ Mario Reverter \/ Arnau Sole\/ Clara Torrent<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I didn\u00b4t think teaching Spanish to Danish people would be that fun. I imagined it was going to be a boring type of class where only we talked and they just repeated, but it wasn\u00b4t like this. The first thing we did was introduce ourselves. Then, as we had made a model of how to introduce yourself in Spanish, we asked them to do the same and surprisingly some of them had a really good level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We played different games, such as a version of Pasapalabra, <\/em>and we \u2018encouraged\u2019 (made!)  them <\/em>sing Spanish songs and dance to \u00b4La macarena\u00b4 all together but with one condition  – they had to then sing a traditional Danish song. This was about a man and if he could take his dog to heaven or not\u2026we had to sing along with them! I would never have imagined myself singing a Danish song in front of 30 Danish people. We ended up talking about things teens do in Denmark and comparing it to what we do here. All in all, it was a great experience and I would repeat it without doubt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
